Socially Distant Photography

The Problem

I have noticed that there have been some photographers, make-up artists, and models who have gone back to photography sessions in the same way as they had prior to the virus. I despair, but the advice and guidance from our government have not always been the clearest.

Social distancing and Coronavirus or COVID 19 has been covered multiple times by numerous government officials and businesses. At the time of writing this, 4th August 2020, the lockdown has eased in the UK yet there are local areas going back into lockdown due to a spike in infection.

My Observations and Actions

As a business owner, a professional, a father, and a husband, I take all of this seriously. In my humble opinion, we do not know enough about this virus and there is speculation about what the next 6 months hold in store for us. Just today there has been an update on the symptoms. What I do know is that the virus is still present and anyone can get it. That means, despite the easing of lockdown, I have continued to maintain the 2 metre distance, wear a mask and gloves when entering public buildings. I do not want my family to catch this virus and I certainly do not want to pass it on to anyone.

My Photography

That is why, when I shot a brand new baby girl three days ago, I wore a mask, used antibacterial gel and maintained my distance. All of my equipment and fabrics are clean. I avoided contact with the parents and the baby. Her immune system is new and underdeveloped. I adjusted my photography to a lifestyle shoot, there is still a requirement for photography. As photographers, we have a responsibility, like every business owner, to adapt our business to the current climate.
